Burnout is increasingly common, but often goes unrecognised until it impacts well-being. It’s more than just tiredness—it’s emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion from prolonged stress. Recognising the signs can help prevent serious consequences.

Symptoms and signs of burnout

  • Physical and mental fatigue
  • Feeling as if everything requires significant effort
  • Loss of motivation or enthusiasm at work
  • Feeling cynical or distant from the job or colleagues
  • Physical symptoms like headaches, muscle tension or an upset stomach
  • Overreacting to stressors

Recognising the signs of burnout early can help you prevent it and protect your physical and mental health. If you notice these signs, try the following methods to ease burnout.

Method #1: Work-life balance

1. Try to leave work at work

  • Block dedicated time for breaks and personal commitments
  • Turn off notifications during weekends

2. Set priorities

  • Prioritise and focus on more important tasks.
  • Be selective about taking on additional tasks

3. Take regular breaks at work, you could try to stretch between tasks

Method #2: Tools for managing stress

  • Mindfulness apps: Mind Charger and Mind Healer on Emma by AXA provide soothing meditation music and soundtracks. They can help you stay relaxed on busy workdays.
  • Time management tools:  Some apps in the market like Todolist or Trello can help to manage tasks and track deadlines.
  • Take charge of your physical and mental wellbeing with regular health and wellness events:  Watch the replay of our past webinar dedicated to mind health: 'Thrive at Work: From Burnout to Balance'.

Method #3: Speak up before it’s too late

Seek help from those around you if you need it and look for a solution at work before burnout becomes a problem.

As an AXA Employee Benefits member, you can access professionals on the AXA mental health network. Find certified GPs, psychologists, or psychiatrists by logging into Emma and searching 'Mind Health' under 'Find a Doctor'.
